Like any young teenager, Joshua McCoy just wants to have fun. And what better way to do that than throw himself a star-studded birthday party. Earlier this year, J threw himself a 15th birthday bash in Los Angeles where he willingly admits to me that “I showed out”. J used this party to promote his music, performing for a crowd comprised of fans and friends. “I have a unique style; a new style, a new swag,” says J, “I think people really enjoyed it.”

At the ripe age of fifteen years old, J. McCoy has accomplished what most artists only dream of. But perhaps that is because while most artists were still dreaming about their career, J. McCoy was already engaged in a successful one. His confidence in himself and his faith in the power of hip-hop sets him apart from other young people who have dared to dream the same dream. His swag is a mixture of charm, humility and frivolity and J brings to life a playfulness to hip-hop that hasn’t been seen in years.

As early as four years old, young J was getting recognized internationally for his role in PAX TV network commercials. By age 8, he appeared in the “Thugz Mansion” video featuring the late Tupac Shakur and Nas. J credits his role in this video, as well as Tupac’s poetic passion combined with Nas’ immaculate skill that sparked within him a desire to pursue music. Not to mention, J comes from a musical family.

In his early career, J credits his success to both his father and uncle who worked tirelessly to create the star that he is today, including writing rhymes for him when he could not. “When I was younger my dad and uncle wrote my rhymes, but now I write for myself”, says J. “The tempo of the song guides me on what to write,” he continues. Today, J’s father serves as his manager still working to make him a super star. But writing isn’t all this high school freshman has to worry about. Besides attending a regular high school, the young rap star also dabbles into acting hosting webisodes for Yo! Raps and even his own scripted reality show, The Real McCoy. “It’s a lot, but in my room I have a big calendar where I schedule in everything”, says J. “even hanging out with friends.” And of course some homework, I hope.

While his young age might cause some potential fans to compare him with the likes of Bow Wow and Romeo among others, J is outspoken about his distinction from these artists. “I think it’s a complement, but it’s rare that you come across a youngun’ like me.” The young teen considers no rapper his equal though he respects the game and all of its players. He also isn’t intimidated by his colleagues who happen to be much older than he is. In fact, J describes his competitors as “humans just like me who happen to rap.” It is this hungry attitude mixed with his humble appreciation for hip-hop that motivates J and elevates him to royalty reigning as the young teen prince of hip-hop.

Touring with teen idols, the Jonas Brothers, has helped J “step-up my stage game” and ultimately become an outstanding performing artist. Yet, out of all the places J has traveled, he calls the Bronx his favorite. “Well, it’s the birthplace of hip-hop and it has huge, tall buildings. I like that,” he says. This scholarly attitude, attention to detail and respect for the culture has also allowed J to work with Mims on his latest single “Got Cake” as well as Bay Area Legend Keak Da Sneak on “Everywhere”. J’s album promises to be contemporary yet ahead of its time. Appropriately titled The Freshman will be released later on this year and features production by some of the best in the industry including Da Internz and Bakery Productions among others.

Perhaps J’s lyrical skills aren’t the most inspirational or complex, nevertheless his cheer determination, confidence and diversity of talent lead me to co-sign him as real dope. In fact, I believe J. McCoy to be a legend in the making, check for him!
