“Hi Hater” was the single that launched him as a national artist, but Maino has been hustling in this game for quite some time. Representing Brooklyn, NY, this hip-hop fanatic turned rapper approaches the game as a student first. “I study the game, I learn from everybody”, he says. And in studying the game, Maino has been able to propel himself forward hoping to fill the gap in hip-hop and ascend the charts to stardom. “I wanted to get in the game in a big way. I want to be able to compete with whatever artist is out there.” However, this is something that NY rappers have struggled to do over the years especially with the Southern take-over. But Maino is determined to put New York back on the map without going back in time. “We can’t relive something, we can’t go backward, we gotta move forward” And Maino isn’t shy about the problems that he faces or the solutions. “I feel like part of the problem with what’s going on in New York now is we don’t produce new artist on a national scale.” Without national attention it’s tough to get any artist’s career, no matter how talented, off the ground. But that’s where the hustle comes in; and Maino does this better than any artist out there. His entertainment company, Hustle Hard Entertainment recently expanded as a publishing company and released its first book last year, “Gangstas Don’t Die” which is written by Maino’s brother Mouse during his incarceration. Maino also released a mixtape this month and was named #15 on MTV.com's '28 In '08: Commercially Released Hip Hop Singles for his hit "Hi Hater". But this “guerilla grinding” doesn’t stop there.
His new album, “If Tomorrow Comes”, hits stores May 19th and with it, Maino predicts “I’ll be the next to blow”. His first single, “All of the Above”, features mega producer Just Blaze and R&B hit-maker T-Pain. The track demonstrates a hustler’s true ambitions as Maino expresses his passion and motivation to succeed. The single also established Maino as lyrically capable to compete with hip-hop greats and fuels a similar energy as Jeezy’s “Soul-Survivor”. T-Pain is an excellent addition to this emotionally charged track that will have fans across the country nodding their heads in agreement. The album, however, does not have a lot of features and this is done deliberately. Because of this, fans are able to experience Maino without all of the hype. “My album is a personal story. I did it like a movie.” With all that Maino has been through in his life, growing up in Brooklyn, going to jail, struggling to survive and then become a hip-hop artist, his story is something that everyone can relate to. His determination to keep it real with himself and his fans expresses a sense of humility and wisdom that is seldom seen in new artists, let alone most people.
At the end of the day, we don’t know if we’ll see tomorrow, but our preparation for what’s ahead gives us strength to go on…if tomorrow comes.
